Elements of Racing Games - Tunnels

Why do so many fictional courses have tunnels of some kind? Is it an obsession like what the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco has? One thing I've learned from racing games is that tunnels help you to gain a bit more speed. Part of the reason is because you don't have as much turbulence from racing at full speed out in the open. So when you did the Max Speed Challenge in Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4, you picked up a little extra speed once you go into the tunnel at Test Course (especially since GT3 and GT4's renditions of Test Course include a tunnel down the backstretch). I'm not crazy about tunnels myself. In fact, many of my own race tracks I've created feature no tunnels. Then again, you can also think of tunnels more like getting shot out of a cannon.

Funny that so many of these tunnels are in various racing games. Here's your insight with many games featuring certain tracks that have tunnels to them...

Are you as crazy about tunnels as most fictional courses and fictional course makers have? You just see a lot of tunnels in a lot of courses, both fictional and non-fictional courses. Traditional Ridge Racer games have always had some sort of tunnel at every track.
