Stargazing

It can be very beautiful to see stars (and other celestial bodies) in the night sky. A clear night's sky supplements its own natural show for all to see. Many people can better see what all the universe has to offer when not around city lights. Those in rural areas, places without lots of city lights, and even those in far northern/southern latitudes and elevations are usually able to see what all the universe has to offer. Here is a random picture I found online to help set the mood for this blog post:

stargazing
^ from: www.starscapes.com (best I could find; this or nothing) - The night sky is full of many wonders and mysteries. What will YOUR stargazing experience have in store for you when you look up in a clear night's sky?

As anyone who visits John's Blog Space knows, I have always had such deep fondness for nighttime. I can remember in 1994 (I was a 5th Grader then) when I was part of a field trip at a camp called Camp Olympia. The first night of my four-day field trip, I looked up into the sky and saw MANY stars at night. The sight was so beautiful. Unfortunately, that star show didn't last long because it would rain hard later that night with rain persisting for the second day. Anyhow, seeing many stars in the sky makes you wonder what all is out there than what we normally see at night. Keep in mind that I live in a big city- Houston. At most, I can see anywhere between 30 to 50 stars in the sky on a clear night in the city. For the rare times I have been away from lots of city lights, MANY more stars are visible in the sky at night. It is really a phenomenal sight to see so many stars in the sky at night. Many more can be seen if you go to an observatory or have a telescope.

Maybe the most interesting thing I've ever seen in the night sky was a shooting star. I actually remembered seeing a shooting star one morning when I was a little boy. I have never really noted solar eclipses or lunar eclipses before. If I actually lived in locations where I could see auroras, I'd love to see how they would look in person. I had actually intended on posting a blog about auroras. I may save that for the near future.

Do you all enjoy looking up at the sky at night? Are there certain things you would love to see in the night sky when looking up at the stars? Are there certain locations for you that are great for looking up at the night sky? Feel free to comment. Thank you for reading!

The Southern Cross (or Crux Australis)

The Southern Cross (or Crux Australis) is the most distinctive constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. It is something I began to notice when I started seeing the flags of certain nations in Oceania and the South Pacific. It is the star arrangement you see on the flags of certain nations. The majority of nations are mostly Oceania and South Pacific nations. However, I learned the Southern Cross can also be found in one specific nation NOT in the South Pacific. More on that later in this blog post. This blog entry is a piece on the Southern Cross.

--- Stars of the Southern Cross ---

The Southern Cross consists of five stars. This picture below shows you the Southern Cross from space, and the info below introduces you to the five stars which comprise the Southern Cross:

Southern Cross
^ from: oneminuteastronomer.com (and this was the best I could find) - the Southern Cross (or Crux Australis) from space.

Stars of the Southern Cross.

•Gamma Crux (86 lightyears)
•Delta Crux (256 lightyears)
•Beta Cruz (or Mimosa; 424 lightyears)
•Epsilon Crux (57 lightyears)
•Alpha 1 Crux (or Acrux; 368 lightyears)

From what I've read, the Southern Cross is important in navigation by sea. You must be south of 30° latittude (if you live in or are located in the Northern Hemisphere) to observe the rather small Crux constellation. Acrux is the brightest star of the Southern Cross. Therefore, you get an indication as to where south is by following the stars of the Southern Cross.

Nations Whose Flags Feature the Southern Cross.

Various South Pacific nations (including one nation that I didn't know had the Southern Cross) have flags with the Southern Cross showcased on them. The most popular country you'll see the Southern Cross on is on the flag of Australia. Other nations with the Southern Cross as part of their flag include (but are not limited to): Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Samoa. Now remember I mentioned that there was one non-South Pacific nation bearing the Southern Cross on its flag? What is that one nation's flag that I didn't know had the Southern Cross? Ever heard of... Brazil? If you look at Brazil's flag, look down from the "P" in "Ordem e Progresso." You will see the Southern Cross marked on the Brazilian flag if you look down from the "P" in "Ordem e Progresso." You should be able to spot the familiar Southern Cross there. I did NOT know about any of this until I saw this on Wikipedia and actually studied Brazil's flag.

Hope you got to enjoy this blog post regarding the Southern Cross (or Crux Australis). I am just "Spring Cleaning" my unfinished blog posts of 2010, and this is one of them. Hope your enjoyed it! Read more about the Southern Cross by reading Crux on Wikipedia.

Signs of the Zodiac

You know the signs, but what about the constellations? This blog entry features the constellations and the stars that comprise all 12 zodiac signs. I must regret to inform you that this is an old blog entry supposed to be about how certain zodiac signs look in space. Because of copyright concerns, I have now just made this a blog post about famous people based on their zodiac symbol. Rather than post pictures of stars in space (which was the primary intent), I will instead link you to Wikipedia so you can learn more about each zodiac sign and each constellation. I am deeply sorry to all of you.

Click on each Wikipedia link to learn more about each sign of the zodiac and of all the stars that comprise each constellation in space.

--- The NEW Zodiac? (added: January 14, 2011) ---

According to the fact that Earth's alignment has changed, so have the dates of the zodiac. Here are the new dates:

New Zodiac Dates...
Capricorn: Jan. 21 to Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 17 to Mar. 11
Pisces: Mar. 12 to April 18
Aries: Apr. 19 to May 13
Taurus: May 14 to June 21
Gemini: June 22 to July 20
Cancer: July 20 to Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 11 to Sep. 16
Virgo: Sep. 17 to Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 31 to Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 24 to Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 to Jan. 20

Ophiuchus: November 30 to December 17

I guess I'm a Sagittarian now. :( I had to change up the dates because you can't be two signs of the zodiac at the same time. I also had to look up the new date for the Ophiuchus sign. Some sites I read had certain end days as the start of a new one. In other words, the last day for Sagittarians is January 20... which is also the first day for the •new• Capricorn date with this new date alignment.

What do you make of all of this?

I'm still not going to adjust the names of famous zodiac people just because of this.

Now you know a few famous people born within those times of the zodiac. Again, I'm sorry that I couldn't post any pictures of each zodiac sign in space, which was the primary intent of this blog post. I still hope you enjoyed reading this as well as learning aobut the different characteristics and such of each zodiac sign. I personally don't believe in horoscopes. Crap happens each day.

Most of the information about the characteristics of each zodiac sign are based on stuff I have read on Zodiac Signs. If you haven't read earlier, I am trying to get rid of as many of my incomplete 2010 blog posts to get ready for 2011, and this is one of them. Hope you like this one!

Space Center Houston

Houston is often referred to as Space City since 1967. One reason why is because of Space Center Houston- the Visitors Center of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. I've been to Space Center Houston a few times in my life. Each time, I grow more and more fond of what all NASA does. Besides space exploration and exhibits, there are lots of fun activities for children (and adults). What I would strongly recommend is for you to go on a tram tour around Space Center Houston. Being able to see all the many attractions and such just gives you greater appreciation for all the work NASA does. You even get to see some of the many facilities used in preparing astronauts as well as in teaching people about being in space. Space Center Houston is both a fun place to go as well as an educational place to go. Your appreciation for all things NASA and in space travel will be greatly expressed when you visit Space Center Houston.

I have a picture I took of Space Center Houston, but it's not very good. So let me show you a picture from off the Internet of Space Center Houston:

This quick blog entry has a new blog label- Stars and Space. This blog label involves various topics regarding astronomy, space exploration, and various other space-related issues and topics. "John's Blog Space" is the name of my blog, and I thought it would be obvious to feature a blog label regarding stars and space.

--- If Any NASA Folk May Read This... ---
I am ALWAYS fascinated about NASA, and their tireless efforts are something I strongly support. All of you men and women serving for NASA are men and women I greatly admire. You are wonderful people. Keep up the great work in all of your space work- whether space exploration, spacewalks, maintaining orbiting crafts and orbital satellites, or whatever... I strongly support your incredible efforts. There is no shortage of fascination about what this universe has to offer.

So yeah... Space Center Houston. If you are visiting Houston or never been to Space Center Houston, I strongly advise you to check out Space Center Houston. After all, the experience this place provides will give you greater appreciation for space as well as Houston's aerospace history. How do you think some of Houston'sports teams got their names? Especially consider Houston teams like the Houston Rockets, Houston Astros, and the former Houston Comets WNBA franchise. Even my fascination with stars and space have fueled my love of nighttime as well as motivation for "John's Blog Space" and "John's Shop Space." So PLEASE- visit Space Center Houston and enjoy something that has played a HUGE role in the history of this great city. You can find it at 1601 NASA Parkway here in Houston.
