No Need to Riot

I don't watch hockey much, but I'm probably sure you've heard by now that the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup for the 2010-2011 season with a convincing 4-0 victory. How did some fans take it? Not very kindly, to put it mildly. I did not see a single second of the match last night. All I do know is that it was completely unnecessary. The Canucks lost; not the fans. So why did some fans insist on rioting in Vancouver? To be honest, the fans who decided that rioting was better than cheering on their hometown hockey team are even bigger losers than the Canucks. It makes absolutely no sense to start such a riot.

The frustration is understandable- "why did my team lose like this?" You win some, you lose some. If your team loses, why take your frustrations out by damaging city property and causing a ruckus all because a sports team loses? My Houston Astros of today seem to fail almost every time they take the baseball field, but do you see Astros fans rioting after losing game after game? People just need to chill out.

I get blog hits from Vancouver and the Vancouver area, but I just have to say that it is truly terrible of certain Vancouver fans by showing your frustration of your team losing by rioting. Rioting after a loss like Vancouver took to Boston only makes things worse. It is perfectly fine to cheer on your team to your heart's content. It is okay to show your passion for your favorite team however you please. However, there is a difference between passion and just being a knucklehead. Passion in being a sports fan means that you cheer for your favorite team as much as you can regardless of the final outcome. Being a knucklehead sports fan means that when all is going wrong, you feel your best option to voice your true feelings is by taking your frustrations out on property, other people, and things like that. Did you play in the game? Are fans responsible for a loss when the actual team just didn't show up? Fans are there to cheer on a team to victory, not tear up the city just because a team loses.

When you go thinking it's okay to riot just because your team loses, not only does the sports team lose, the fans and the city show themselves as losers. It only makes a team losing feel even worse. Unruly sports fans only make a loss seem worse than it really is. You win with class; you lose with class. Why give a beautiful city like Vancouver such an ugly image by voicing your displeasure with your team losing by rioting? It just doesn't make any sense.

My Thoughts and Prayers Go Out to Japan and the South Pacific

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake recently rocked northern Japan triggering a tsunami. The epicenter was reported some 80 east of Sendai, Japan and 231 miles northeast of Tokyo. Most of the worst damage shown on video was from farm land in Sendai (northern Honshu Island; northeastern Japan). I saw some powerful video of the earthquake impacting a building in Tokyo. It was absolutely scary. This earthquake and the impending tsunamis impact not only Japan, but also various other nations along Pacific coastlines as well as Pacific Island nations. I've heard of some four million homes and buildings in Tokyo are out of power. A recent briefing (as of 3:36 AM Central Standard Time; March 11, 2011) by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) noted the earthquake was reported as an 8.8-magnitude earthquake.

Therefore, I've created this blog entry to offer my thoughts and prayers to all of you in hopes that you all are okay. In case of major damage, I hope you will be able to recover from this, even if it takes weeks, months, or even years to recover. My best wishes are with all in Japan as well as in many Pacific Island nations.

A Brief Message From Me to All of my Readers/Visitors in Japan:

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you affected from the recent 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the impending tsunamis. This is a most unusually powerful earthquake to impact Japan. I hope all of you are okay and are able to recover. I hope you all will are alright.

I sincerely hope you all are alright. I'd hate to even fathom experiencing this earthquake myself in Japan. So I hope all of you are alright. My best prayers and hopes for recovery are with all of you. If lives are lost, I am deeply sad for all of you. If property is damaged, I hope you will be able to recover lost land and property and be able to get life back to normal. This also applies to any tsunami damage that may or may have impacted Japan.

Hope all of you are well. My best wishes are with all of you in Japan.

A Brief Message From Me to All of my Readers/Visitors in Pacific Nations and Pacific Coast Locations:

I hope for the best for all of you. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I'm especially hopeful people in the South Pacific will be okay. As much as I've focused blog posts on the South Pacific, there are some Pacific Island nations that don't really have high ground to get to if in case of a tsunami. So I am GREATLY concerned for all of you. I hope you all will be okay regardless. While the impact in Japan is strongest, the tsunami and other impacts can devastate Pacific Island nations and certain Pacific coastline locations. I am even more concerned for Pacific Island nations since some Pacific nations are at or just above sea level- NOT good if high waves and waters come along. So once again- my thoughts and prayers are with all of you in addition to my thoughts and prayers to all impacted in Japan.

As for all along Pacific coastlines, I hope you all are okay and will be okay. Please take care and hope all of you are safe and content. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with all of you in Pacific island nations and along Pacific coastlines.

Thoughts and Prayers from Me to All Affected.

If you are any of my readers from Japan or various North Pacific and South Pacific nations, I want to offer my deepest thoughts and prayers to all of you whom have been impacted from the earthquake or or any impending tsunamis. As much as I would love to go to Japan, that's the one thing I fear about going there- being in an earthquake. The Ring of Fire is a very active deal. I hope all of you readers from Japan or Pacific nations are okay. My thoughts, prayers, and best wishes go out to all of you in hopes that you are alright and that you all are able to recover from this. Recovery may take months or even years, but I hope everything is okay with all of you.

I always honor and respect my international audience to people who visit my blog(s) and my other online works. So therefore, I am always concerned and hopeful my international audience is alright. I am most concerned for my Japanese and Pacific audiences in this situation. So again... my best wishes and deepest prayers are with everyone involved, including friends and family in the affected areas.

Thoughts on Esperanza Spalding's Grammy Upset of Justin Bieber for Best New Artist

I asked the same question- who is Esperanza Spalding? You know what I'm talking about if you saw the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards back on Sunday. Justin Bieber was almost a lock for the Grammy of Best New Artist. You don't have the sort of meteoric rise that J-Be had... and NOT pick up a prestigious title like Best New Artist. Nobody heard of or cared about Esperanza Spalding, a jazz bassist and singer from Portland, Oregon, USA; until they saw Esperanza upset J-Be for the honor of Best New Artist. What was a stunner to me, however, was how some upset fans felt it was best to trash Esperanza Spalding's Wikipedia entry.

This blog post is just a few thoughts about how some J-Be fans felt about the upset of Justin Bieber losing Best New Artist to a relatively unknown performer. This is not a "Famous Person" post of any kind. I am not here to profile either Esperanza Spalding or Justin Bieber. All this is about is my own thoughts regarding how some fans have reacted towards Justin Bieber not winning the Grammy for Best New Artist and the reaction certain fans have made in response to this.

I don't post blog posts just to gain negative attention. I am truthful and professional in my comments. So having said this, get ready to read my thoughts.

--- Setting Up the Story ---

Here's how the deal unfolded. There were five nominees for Best New Artist. Esperanza Spalding was one of five different nominees up for the award. These were the nominees:

* Esperanza Spalding
* Justin Bieber
* Drake
* Florence and the Machine
* Mumford and Sons

And as you can tell from context, Esperanza Spalding won the title to MY amazement including the rest of the world who had Bieber Fever. Those who can't stand Justin Bieber would probably say that he is severely overrated and should stop whining about not winning Best New Artist. Those who truly love Justin Bieber felt heartbroken that J-Be didn't get the honor thanks to the relative unknown (unless you follow Esperanza's genre of music) Esperanza Spalding. Some who probably are complete music fans (meaning lovers of many kinds of music) likely feel that it's great for Esperanza to win the honors that she did.

What happens when you're a fan of someone or something, and you become heartbroken they didn't win something significant? You go on a spat. That's EXACTLY what some Justin Bieber fans did, trashing the Wikipedia entry on Esperanza Spalding by posting all kinds of crap about her. The trashed page was later cleaned up by Wikipedia. Clearly, some Bieber fans took this Grammy loss almost as if a corrupted and controversial politician was elected leader of a nation. Was this really necessary? I am here to post my own thoughts in the next section.

--- Thoughts on Certain Bieber Fans ---

My thoughts on this whole deal requires me to look at this from a number of perspectives. So bear with me here.

Understanding the Frustration.

If you are in the movie business, your goal is to win Emmy awards. If you are in the Broadway musical business (I personally severely dislike Broadway musicals), you want to win Tony awards. If you are in the musical business, you want to win the Grammys. Look back at the nominees for Best New Artist for 2010- Justin Bieber was an absolute lock, and only Drake would be the second-best pick. So for Justin Bieber to not win Best New Artist at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards is truly heartbreaking considering the meteoric rise to fame the Canadian teenager has garnered.

The Grammys are NOT a Popularity Contest.

As much as I like to think it is like a popularity contest, the Grammys encompass all of music- not just the more popular genres of music. The sad fact of the Grammys (for most people, anyways) is... the Grammys is about excellence in multiple forms of music. Esperanza Spalding won Best New Artist over Justin Bieber in an upset. It's an upset to me because no one could have envisioned someone not seriously popular to win this award. It's like when I was stunned during the 2009 Video Music Awards when Taylor Swift won "Best Female Video" (and we all know what happened after she won the award when a fellow named KanYe West shown up on stage) in an upset.

Bieber would be the outright winner of Best New Artist in the minds of many, but the Grammy voters chose Esperanza Spalding instead. J-Be fans who thought Bieber would win the Grammy for Best New Artist probably thought he was snubbed in favor of Esperanza Spalding. Those who probably believe in conspiracy theory thought that Bieber was going to win Best New Artist hands down... until someone or something voted Esperanza Spalding instead for the Grammy.

Severe Side Effects of "Bieber Fever."

Bieber Fever is what many fans have for fans of Justin Bieber. If there were side effects to Bieber Fever, certain fans demonstrated the most severe side effects after the Grammys- total lack of respect for the other nominees. I was as stunned that Justin Bieber didn't win Best New Artist as you probably were (unless you hate Justin Bieber). What I am disgusted with was how people felt it was absolutely needed to trash Esperanza Spalding with disrespectful and threatening comments online.

I am not any kind of Bieber fanatic. I respect Justin Bieber greatly. I DON'T respect how certain fans can stoop to such a low of going on an epic rage and trashing online material related to Esperanza Spalding. Winning a Grammy is a prestigious honor. Anyone, at least in the mainstream American music society, dreams of winning a Grammy (even if not any televised honors) for their work. Winning a Grammy completes you and establishes you as a musical elite. Winning multiple Grammy awards establishes you as a total elite.

I think Justin Bieber will win at least one Grammy award before he completely hangs up his musical career. Some fans took Bieber's losing of Best New Artist too far. Trashing somebody else's online profile just because Justin Bieber didn't win Best New Artist is NOT... and I repeat, NOT going to help better his chances of being Best New Artist. If anything, it just speaks volumes to how inconsiderate and tasteless some fans of Justin Bieber have been in handling this Grammy upset. You do NOT go around posting upsetting and threatening content just because your musical favorite didn't win a certain award. You are putting yourself in potential trouble by posting such content online. I am not disrespecting all fans of Justin Bieber- I am just taking issue with Justin Bieber fans who thought it was okay to trash somebody [that very few have ever heard of] for winning an award that an outright favorite probably should have won.

Looking at the Issue in a Different Way.

As an alternative example, I wanted Lady Antebellum (remember- I'm not a country music fanatic) to win the Triple Crown of Grammys- Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. I wanted them to get this Triple Crown since they were having such a wonderful night. They were denied that Triple Crown when The Suburbs (who I NEVER heard of and weren't impressed with) won "Album of the Year" over Lady Antebellum. When Lady Antebellum didn't win "Album of the Year," did I go on an epic rage posting all kinds of hateful material online? No. I wasn't part of the voting committee to vote for the Grammy winners. I am a fan of music just like many of you. My influence wouldn't have meant anything in swaying the interest of the Grammy voters to choose Lady Antebellum over The Suburbs as much as J-Be fans' influences wouldn't have swayed Best New Artist honors from Esperanza Spalding to Justin Bieber.

In Conclusion...

The classless and stupid ways of certain Justin Bieber fans, who decided the best way to vent frustration by trashing another artist, was completely unnecessary. What has Esperanza Spalding done to you to where you feel it is perfectly acceptable to trash Esperanza for winning a Grammy that Justin Bieber probably should have won? You probably never heard of Esperanza Spalding until the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards like I have. That doesn't mean, however, that you should rant on Esperanza Spalding like she stole a Grammy from Justin Bieber. Fact of the matter is- Esperanza seemingly did more than enough to win the respect of Grammy voters than what Justin Bieber has worked up for the past few years. I see this as an upset and still see this as an upset. What makes ME upset is how some J-Be fans felt it was absolutely necessary to post threatening and disgraceful content online, even if you have never heard of Esperanza Spalding.

Justin Bieber still shown his support to all of his fans for cheering him on in not winning Best New Artist (including a few other Grammy nominations he didn't win). Bieber even said that himself this experience has helped him to work harder to win himself one or multiple Grammy awards in the future. Some disgruntled J-Be fans just chose to go to this extreme of trashing Esperanza the way they did. You're not fighting Bieber's battles- you're just disgracing yourself while showing support for J-Be. Justin Bieber just didn't win Best New Artist at this year's Grammys. It is not the end of the world. Get a hold of yourself and be more considerate to other artists. And just because you've never heard of an artist or group doesn't mean you have to hate on him/her/them.

Justin Bieber may have lost Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding, but the REAL losers are all the ones who disgraced themselves in the process of disgracing Esperanza. You stooped yourself to such an incredulous low in showing your disapproval of Justin Bieber not winning the Best New Artist Grammy award. Congratulations, sore losers. You may now use this wise usage of your time wisely to make your acceptance speech for being such inconsiderate and disrespectful fans of music. Congratulations on this dishonor to all of you who vented your anger at Esperanza in this manner.

What would I say...

...to Justin Bieber?

If Justin Bieber somehow reads this... I'm sorry you didn't win Best New Artist. You're going to win at least one Grammy award before you completely retire from music. Keep your head up and keep working to make great music.

...to Esperanza Spalding?

Congratulations to you, Esperanza! Very few people have ever heard of you until you won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Congratulations on winning this honor.

The Other Hawaii

Before I begin, let me say that I am not comfortable discussing matters of government or any sort of radical movements or whatever. I am not comfortable discussing these things because it is too easy to rile up someone or get some kind of reaction that ends up angering people. So I have therefore avoided doing mentions of the past. But after watching a two-part YouTube video, I will try to do a rare blog post regarding political or social matters. This is not a personal commentary piece. It is instead a digest based on what I've read online and in a two-part YouTube video series. These have helped me to better understand Hawaii and its history. I am not going to make any serious opinions in this blog post. PLEASE correct me on anything I've messed up on (because I WILL mess something up here), and do so in a respectful manner, please.

This blog post was made somewhat per the request of someone who sent me some YouTube videos showing a deeper side of Hawaii apart from the tourism and happy times. These two videos were purely powerful. If you are someone who feels that I am not giving enough quality material regarding Hawaii, I'm sorry. I don't post anything truthfully unless I truly know something (or come very close). Most of my material comes from YouTube and Wikipedia.

Before you read further into this, here are two 11-minute videos describing what this deal in general. "The Other Hawaii" was shown in two parts. These videos were posted on YouTube on September 26, 2008. Both are rather long (both 11 minutes long), so if you don't want to see these videos, you don't have to. They are just there to give you insight as to what this blog post is about.

--- The Issues at Hand ---

Let me try to discuss this as best as I can. Before Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States, it was known as the Kingdom of Hawaii. Two videos from Al Jazeera English's YouTube channel have gotten me to understand a side of Hawaii that is much different from the tropical paradise and tourism giant Hawaii can be. A deeper look at Hawaii, however, notes what all Hawaii has endured in its long history. Issues such as poverty, homelessness, and various health care problems. A once proud kingdom was taken over by the United States starting in 1893. Even before then, there was the so-called "Bayonet Constitution" which was the document turning over Hawaii of its monarchy government in favor of control under American, European and native Hawaiians. The Bayonet aspect was called such because the Hawaiian King (King Kal?kaua) was forced to sign it with armed militia to avoid being deposed.

The key issue here is on (from the two videos you might have seen earlier in this post) Hawaiian self-determination. These are about people who want to maintain their indigenous character rather and not have their native culture and customs purely taken away. It's about many Hawaiians feeling like most of their land and customs have been taken away without consent or consolidation.

--- Hawaii: State or Country? ---

Considering that Hawaii used to be the Kingdom of Hawaii, I became curious as to if Hawaii is truly a state or a country. Some native Hawaiians feel that their native way of life and culture have been taken apart since the United States took control of Hawaii in 1893. Hawaii has its own state song, called Hawai'i Pono'i ("Hawaii's Own"). It used to be the national anthem for Hawaii back during the Kingdom of Hawaii days.

From the 2010 Miss South Pacific Pageant in Papua New Guinea, there was a representative for Hawaii. The beautiful Pomaikai Klein (or Pomaika'i Klein) was Miss Hawaii/Hawai'i in this competition. Not "Miss American Hawaii," but Miss Hawaii.

The Quest for Hawaiian Self-Determination.

The year 1993 (Bill Clinton was U.S. President) marked 100 years since America's overthrow of Hawaii. The many acres of land (1.8 million acres) wanted by Hawaiians. What generated controversy in all of this is that the United States admittedly seized Hawaiian land without consent or compensation. Some Hawaiians feel their native culture and way of life have been taken away. When you have Hawaiians saying "I am not an American" as was said in 1993, you know something is up among some Hawaiians. A number of Hawaiians are either for becoming its own sovereign state of indigenous people, and others are not in favor of Hawaiian sovereignty. Those who seek Hawaiian independence or sovereignty feel that through the United States, some Hawaiians aren't getting much in terms of money, land, compensation, or anything like that.

A lot of Hawaiian people feel new energy in reclaiming their culture and way of life and trying to retain their identity and indigenous ways. Some Hawaiians really dislike the United States today even since the invasion of Hawaii long ago. A group called Sudden Rush expressed Hawaiian sovereignty. They are a powerful music group delivering messages of sovereignty through adult contemporary music.

--- What If: Hawaii Reinstatement of the Kingdom of Hawaii? ---

I honestly don't know what it would be like for Hawaii to return as a Kingdom. I do wonder what it would be like if the compensation and such was granted to Hawaii. Could it mean that you have to have a visa or a passport or something to visit Hawaii? How could Hawaii sustain itself as a reinstated kingdom? I honestly don't know what to think about this.

Some believe that if Hawaii returned to kingdom status, the possible heir to the throne could be musician Owana Salazar (featured in my "Music of the South Pacific" blog post), who is related to the royal family of Hawaii. So she would be Queen of the Kingdom of Hawaii if Hawaii returned to being the Kingdom of Hawaii.





All you have read and seen here is a different Hawaii. What many of us consider a travel destination has its own dark history. Apart from being a travel destination lies a deeper and more hate-filled part of Hawaii among most who dislike the rule of Hawaii. As I read in a graphic, some Hawaiians feel they are "Hawaiian by blood, but American by force." Again- I am providing all of this for exposure and education. I am a native of Texas. I cannot, therefore, say that I have heartfelt feelings about Hawaiians seeking sovereignty. A lot of Hawaiians are somewhat divided on this. Some want independence and their culture back, and some others just don't know what to think about this whole thing even years since the overthrow of Hawaii back in the 19th Century.

As I said earlier, I don't know enough about this issue or want to discuss any further into this to where I start a firestorm. What I've been able to learn from all of this is that there are some Hawaiians who feel like Hawaii was taken over and taken away by other nations. What has sparked any recent wanting for Hawaii to seek self-determination and soverignity is beyond me. Topics relating to government are too strong for me. That's why I avoid them, because it's too easy to say the wrong thing and get people in an uproar. The last thing I want to do is offend any of my readers or visitors by posting something inaccurate or anything to incite a firestorm. I don't want to lose my fan base. All I have done here was express certain issues in a digest manner. I have not expressed any opinions because I just don't know what to think.

Climate Change and the South Pacific

Climate change and global warming are two huge issues. They are even more so for the various South Pacific islands and other nations I've made blog posts about. Fear is that changes to our climate and global warming could end up in elevated waters that may completely submerge various South Pacific islands and island nations. There is a YouTube channel called 100PlacesToRemember featuring certain places that may undergo some serious changes in the future. To demonstrate how devastating global warming can be to the South Pacific, have a look at this video highlighting what dark future could await the island nation of Tuvalu as a result of global warming:



That is why when I did my reading online for my blog entry Oceania and the South Pacific, the issue of global warming and climate change is of serious concern to the South Pacific. There are many among the South Pacific who feel a lot more can be done to preserve these island paradises. Even Miss South Pacific 2009 winner, Merewalesi Nailatikau of Fiji, wanted to express her views regarding global warming and how it impacts (or could impact) the South Pacific. This issue is of great concern to people of the South Pacific. We may think global warming will greatly impact developed and more industrialized countries. However, global warming and climate change could devastate the South Pacific (among other locations). Some would take their chances if climate change ends up devastating the South Pacific, but global warming is still a serious environmental issue no matter where in the world you are.

I just want all of you to know- I am NOT in any way any kind of environmental activist or anything. So DO NOT think that I am trying to persuade anybody into doing something to help save our environment and our world. This is just an issue that concerns me in regards to the South Pacific. I've been making a bunch of blog posts recently with the South Pacific in mind to expand my global audience and to meet new people, and part of meeting a new audience involves understanding issues both good and bad with other people and other nations. I do value and appreciate all of my readers from around the world.



Global warming and climate change is a serious environmental issue as it is, and it can be even more serious for various South Pacific islands and island nations. Places like Kiribati, French Polynesia, Micronesia, the Cook Islands, and places like that could be submerged in water for good thanks to global warming. To all of the lives affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti, I would like to extend my deepest thoughts and prayers to all whom have been affected. For more information on this situation, here is a report from CNN: 7.0 quake hits Haiti; could be 'catastrophe,' official says (CNN)

I really hope Haiti can recover and get their lives back in order from this horrible disaster. I pray for hope, promise, and prosperity in trying to get life back to normal there.
